On Wednesday, March 3, Professor Guy Alaerts gave a lecture on the resilience of international water management. This open session was organized by the NWB Fund’s KIWI learning program and was aimed at all employees of water authorities and other organizations internationally active in water management.
Alaerts has extensive experience in the international water sector, particularly in the financial world surrounding international water management. He took the participants through the significant challenges related to water and what this means for water managers around the world who are faced with increasing complexity and the need for integrated solutions. Furthermore, there is a demand for large investments, but in practice, it proves to be a major challenge to connect the financial world with that of water managers. In addition to the fact that they do not speak the same language, it turns out to be difficult to translate globally available financing into large-scale (bankable) projects.
Water is central to almost all of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and according to Alaerts, it is highly uncertain whether we will achieve these goals by 2030. Therefore, it is crucial to carefully consider how these two worlds can be brought together in a way that benefits sustainable, integrated water management and meets the needs of local populations.
