Climate smart agriculture in eSwatini
In the summer of 2023 Ingo van Lohuizen and Joyce Tentij entered the Klimaat- en Innovatieprogramma Waterschappen Internationaal (in short: KIWI programm) of the NBW Fund. They became members of the Blue Deal eSwatini team. During two years they travelled to southern Africa to work on a bankable proposal for small scale farmers in the Lomati catchment of eSwatini. Essence of their project is to support these farmers with installing drip irrigation energized by solar panels.

Strengthening reforestation in Ethiopia from the bottom up
In Ethiopia a massive reforestation initiative takes place. It’s the Green Legacy Initiative (GLI). This nationwide reforestation campaign is initiated at Prime Minister level and cascades down to local level. However, the process is highly top-down and local characteristics are insufficiently taken into consideration. Both the local geohydrological characteristics as well as community interests require more attention. At the same time the water system is under pressure by

Nature-based solutions in Tanzania’s Mindu Dam Catchment for water security
In Morogoro, Tanzania, the Mindu Dam plays a critical role in providing drinking water to over 75% of the city’s population. However, increasing pressures on soils and the watershed—such as deforestation, land degradation, and erosion—combined with the impacts of climate change, threaten the long-term reliability of this vital water source. To address these challenges, World Waternet, the Wami Ruvu Basin Water Board (WRBWB), and drinking water utility MORUWASA are piloting

In the highlands of the Piura river basins in northern Peru, a paradox emerges: while these areas are vital for generating and regulating freshwater throughout the region and have enormous ecological potential, local communities face significant economic and environmental challenges for keeping their farming and livelihoods, driving a strong youth migration to the coast. The probl

Rainwater harvesting in Salfit, Palestine
In Salfit, a city in the West Bank, water security is shaped by a paradox. Despite receiving relatively high annual rainfall compared to other parts of the West Bank, nearly 60 per cent of Salfit’s drinking water is imported. This dependency makes the local water system vulnerable to supply disruptions, climate variability and increasing pressure on shared water resources. World Waternet examined this challenge in a white paper that explores how rainwater harvesting can str
