Waterfunds and catchment management: a study in the Minds catchment of Tanzania

Waterfunds can be a smart way to organise and fund the mangement of a catchment. Public and private partners who have an interest in enough clean water in a certain area, all contribute depending on their stake and capacity. This contribution can be in-kind of financial. Local communities upstream can support reforestation for instance, to prevent erosion and sedimentation of dams that provide people downstream with water. Cities and companies downstream invest in this reforestation.
In Tanzania World Waternet (representing water authority Amstel Gooi en Vecht) studied the possibilities for such a waterfund in the Mindu catchment (see report attached). A proposal for EU WOP funding has been submitted with the aim to restore and maintain the entire Mindu catchment; establising a waterfund is part of that.
